Watch the video to see what a dust storm was like: dust storm link
**When you answer your question, also respond to the videos.  What did you think or learn?

1. What was happening in the chapter "Tested by Dust"?  Why did that title have a double meaning?

2. What are Ma's suggestions to Pa about the wheat not growing?

3. Why was the rain on p. 46 - "no blessing"?

4. What war are they talking about in "World War"?  How does Billie Jo compare the war and dust storms?

5. On page 46, what does it mean "Who fared better?"

6. Why does Ma let Billy Jo go on the road with Arley?

I think that "Who fared better" possibly means who did better or best. Or who got it better.

She suggested growing cotton and sorghum, but he said it had to be wheat
She also suggested putting in a pond, but Bayard said the water will seep right back into the ground as fast as he could pump it

  3. For the rabbit drive i think that its violent and sad. But they had to do it because the rabbits were taring away there soil and plants. For the dust storm i think that it would be very scary to live in a time like that.To eat, sleep, and breath dust would be disgusting and not healthy to consume.

The rain was "no blessing" because the rain came down too hard and washed the crops and soil away and her dad had the choice to replant the crops or give up.

  5. #1- In the chapter, 'Tested by Dust' , the school was taking a test when all of a sudden a dust storm blew in. I think 'tested by dust' has a double meaning because the first meaning means they had a test during a dust storm and the second meaning means that the dust was testing them to see if they could take a test during a storm.

RABBIT DRIVE- The rabbit drive video made me sad to know that jack rabbits had to be killed, but at the same time it also makes sense to me because they were there like a plague, it practically was a plague, I guess.

DUST STORM- I thought the dust storm looked kind of dangerous, before I'd just thought it was a little dust in a thunderstorm or something. Now I understand why they came during droughts and why it would be dangerous to go outside in one of them. Even if it creaks through a bolted door, it could be dangerous.

  6. RABBIT DRIVE- I thought that that was very depressing to watch because I don't thinks it's right to kill the animals, but the rabbits were tearing up their soil and crops. I thought the could have just put a fence around it so the rabbits couldn't get it instead of clubbing them to death.

DUST STORM- I learned that the dust storm was a really hard thing to live through. I can't imagine how hard it was for them to live like that with dust on their food and in their house. I learned that it was just a depressing time to live in.

  7. dust storm- the dust storms are really dangerous because the dust could get in your eyes, you could breath it in and get sick. it also rips up your soil and crops.
rabid drive- I think it is mean and cruel to be smacking jack rabid's with clubs. But i do understand that the jack rabid's were ripping up there soil and crops. So i guess the people were doing it for revenge...

  8. #6 When Billie Jo wanted to go with Arley her mom didn't let her leave, but when she said she would get money for playing the piano on the road her mom said"okay but only for the summer".Also Arley said"you can also bring your mom to".

  9. Rabbit drive- I think it would be harsh to beat up a jack rabbit with a club.Even though the rabbits were trying to survive it really shouldn't have happen.I believe it would be scary to live in the dust bowl.

  10. #3. The rain on p.46 was no blessing because the rain washed away and took most of the crops
