Summer 1934

1. On page 58 - 59, how does the family show compassion for others in need? Are there any other places in the chapter that do that?

2. Explain the accident.  What happened?  Was it someone's fault?  If so, whose?

3. What does the dad do after the accident?  Why do you think so?  Do you think that was ok?

4. What happened in the chapter "Blame"?  Why was it called that?

5. Why is dad digging a hole?  What does Billy think of that?  What does the hole represent?

6. What were the historical references in this chapter? (What events are actually true?) Why do you think the author did that?  Do you think that actually happened?

The dad put a pail of kerosene next t the stove.Ma thought it was water, she poured it and made a rope of fire.Mom ran across the kitchen and out the porch door, yelling for her dad. Billy Joe tried to help and threw it out the porch door, but she did not know that her mom was standing right there.Billy Joe tried to save her and the baby, but it was no good. She caught on fire and got burned very bad.

  2. 3) What the dad did after the accident was he used up Ma's saved money and went out and drank. I don't think this is okay because his wife was sitting at home dying and his daughters hand where burnt. He should of saved the money for later and stayed at home to tend to his family.

    3. Yes. It was very wrong of the dad to do that because HIS wife needed water but instead he got drunk on alcohol.

    5. I agree that it was very wrong of him to go out while his wife could possibly die, and use HER own saved\stored money that was for emergencies.

  3. 4) The chapter was named "Blame" because everyone was blaming Billy Joe and saying she was the reason the fire started and no one knew that it was really her dad who caused the fire.

  4. (5) No one knows for sure dad is digging a hole but billy Joe made it sound like he was doing it for his wife. I truly think the hole/pound represents he truly cared about his wife. ~lars~

    1. I agree with Madeline that dad is digging a pond in honor of ma because she wanted a wind mill and pond to raise more money. Also Billy Jo thinks dad is crazy for digging the pond.

in the chapter "Blame" in the beginning of it dads sister comes to claim the baby but it dies before she gets their. After that their is a funeral for Ma and the baby. But everybody at the funeral just says"Billy Jo threw the pail" when really it was the fathers fault for leaving the hot water on the stove. I think that its called blame because everyone is blaming Billy Jo for the deaths of her mother and brother.

  7. 4: The chapter was called Blame, because lots of people blamed Billy Joe for thinking he started the fire, but no one knows that it was their dad who started the fire. That everyone thought Billy Joe started.
